Malcolm Clark, Chairman
Malcolm’s professional titles have included such things as deep sea diver, poisonous snake collector, director of biological research and judo instructor. While studying in Japan, he was chosen to be one of two principal students of Dr. T. Yoshii, the innovator of the use of sawdust as a substrate for growing mushrooms.
With this knowledge, he returned to North America and collaborated with a group of Japanese-Canadians to start the cultivation of shiitake. During this period, he met David Law and the idea of Gourmet Mushrooms, Inc. was hatched. In 1977, he and David began building their dream of commercial cultivation of exotic mushrooms in Sebastopol, California.
Malcolm has introduced the cultivation of several specialty mushrooms (Clamshell™, Pompon Blanc™, Hen of the Woods, Forest Nameko™) as well as nutraceutical production of such rare fungi as Cordyceps among many others.
